ABCDEat Taste of Taiwan Box

ABCDEat Logo

What is Taiwan famous for? Apart from the hot springs and shopping, Taiwan is also famous for their local street snacks. From pineapple cakes, dandan noodles, sun cakes – you name it! Try out our Taste of Taiwan Box now to try out all the crazy and wacky flavours of Taiwan!! You’l surely fall in love!!!

Here is my second box from ABCDEat. This is an Asian snack service that was started by a YouTuber/Blogger named Genie and her partner. This is not a subscription service because it does not automatically renew but you can receive monthly boxes, specialty boxes, and their pouches. At the moment, they are not releasing new boxes but hopefully they will be back to it soon.

This box was $22 I believe including shipping so I thought that I would try it out in the hopes that it wouldn’t be all seafood snacks.

Taiwan Pineapple Cake

This is a Taiwan specialty, and it’s definitely something that you can’t miss if you ever go to Taiwan. It is a soft shortbread cake filled with a sweet pineapple paste with a chewy texture. There are many different fillings nowadays, but the traditional is using pineapple.

My apologies on the lack of a picture of the actual little cakes. I tried to break it to take a picture but I ended up mashing it to smithereens and I thought that wouldn’t work out so well for you guys. Now, I am not the biggest fan of shortbread but I do really love pineapple so I was excited for this one. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t my favourite either. The pineapple portion was really sweet and I found I was missing the tang that pineapple can have sometimes. I will definitely eat this though so it is still a win.

Cute Ya White Chocolate Almond Cookie Rolls

These are bite sized cookies covered in smooth white chocolate, and covered with almonds and coconut powder. These are non-fried. These are perfect to go with a cup of coffee or tea.

I actually really enjoy these cookies. We got 2 of them in the box and I am happy with that because they were tasty. They have a nice, almost wafer-like crunch to them that I really enjoy. With almonds, coconut, and white chocolate I really can’t complain because those are all tasty things! I think I will have my second cookie with a cup of coffee because that does sound like it would be nice!

I Mei Taipei Egg Crisps with Dried Fish Floss (Salmon, Tuna)

Egg rolls are a traditional Chinese specialty, but what the Taiwanese have added to this crispy delicacy is some dried salmon & tuna floss in the middle, giving the egg rolls a different kind of taste – the egg roll is sweet, whereas the floss is slightly salty, and watch how the floss melts inside your mouth, absolutely delicious!

I just can’t do it. I know that in my last ABCDEat post I said that I wanted to be adventurous and try new things but I just can’t do it with this one. However, just because I am not interested in it doesn’t mean someone else won’t be. That’s why I didn’t open this one up yet, in case I found a friend who would like to have it.

Anbao Crisp Honey Cookies

The Taiwanese love incorporating honey into their cuisine, and these crisp honey cookies are one of the examples with honey in it! Honey has a special flavour that sugar cannot replace, and that’s what’s so special about this snack – a crunchy snack that contains both sesame and honey – double tick!

I have to agree that I love the taste of honey in snacks! It is just so yummy. We got 2 little bags of these crisps and I really like them. They have a sweet and nutty flavour that is almost leaning towards the savoury side because of the sesame. Really tasty!

Chiao-E Handmade Brown Sugar Pumpkin Pie

Although the English translation of the packaging says the cake is using brown sugar, but in fact, it actually contains black sugar. It is not very popular to take black sugar, as black sugar is said to be very healthy for the body! These are our childhood favourites – a fried dough covered in black sugar syrup, and these even added pumpkin puree!

Now, I am not one for pumpkin pie kinds of things. I don’t eat it at Thanksgiving or any other holidays, so I was a little nervous about this one. I really like it though! It is nice and crisp which I enjoy and it reminds me of something that I can’t quite put my finger on. Definitely worth a try though!

Playful Naughty Original Quail Egg (Best Before: May 8 2015)

No preservatives added. Quail eggs have said to be very nutritious as they are packed with vitamins and minerals. Even with their small size, their nutritional value is three to four times greater than chicken eggs, so no wonder, the Taiwanese love to eat them! These quail eggs have been soaked in a special sauce for a period of time, so that the eggs harden and turn black – try them to see how bouncy eggs can taste!

This is another one that I can’t do. I can hardly deal with regular eggs let alone black quail eggs. I know that this is just a matter of personal preference, and someone else could really love these!

Cute Ya Strawberry Chocolate Almond Cookie Rolls

These are bite sized cookies covered in smooth strawberry chocolate, and covered with almonds and coconut powder. These are non-fried. These are perfect to go with a cup of coffee or tea.

These are the same company as the white chocolate almond cookies. I find the texture of these reminds me of the cheese snacks I received in my ABCDEat Happy Friday Pouch. I am quite fond of this cookie too. I think I prefer the white chocolate one but I am a fan of strawberry so this is definitely good for me!

I am not sure if the full sized boxes are worth $22 for me. I may try another one if there is a candy kind of one that comes out because I think that would be more of a winner for me! If I order from ABCDEat again, it would probably be one of the $9 pouches so that I could try out a couple of things without it being too much of a risk.

I think that if you like to try cool new snacks, than ABCDEat might be of interest to you! If you want to check them out, you can view their facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/ABCDEat, you can find their website here http://www.abcdeatbox.com/, or you can watch Genie’s video about the service here: ABCDEat Video.

ABCDEat Happy Friday Pouch

Here is the first instalment of my order from ABCDEat.

What I have ordered is called the Happy Friday Pouch which is a smaller and less expensive version of one of the boxes. This pouch is only $8.99 USD and this includes the shipping. I had seen some unboxing posts about the pouch and knew that it was a bit of a risk for me because I do not particularly like seafood and there were definitely some seafood snacks in the pouches. I decided that for $9 I would take the risk.

This package came very well bubble wrapped and protected that it was nice to see that they took the effort to package it instead of just throwing it all inside of a mailer. There is not a card for the pouch so this probably won’t be 100% accurate in terms of company names and what not but I will try my best. Let’s see what we got!

Dahfa Fish Snacks

Dahfa Fish Snack (Product of Malaysia)

Gahhh…Right off the bat there is seafood. I had seen this snack in other unboxings and really hoped I wouldn’t get it. I would be less afraid of seafood flavoured chips or something like that but this is legitimate fish jerky basically. The ingredients are: wheat flour, fish meat, salt, sugar, chilli, soya sauce, flavour enhancer. I am absolutely terrified of this one.

I have been wanting to “lady up” if you will and try new foods without being such a baby. So, for the sake of a thorough review of the products, I have tasted one of these strips despite my wimpy feelings about the whole thing. Right when I took it out of the packaging it smelled so much like fish tank. Yes, I am this big of a wuss about food, it’s silly I know. It has a weird paper-ish kind of texture and at first it doesn’t really taste like anything but then the fish taste hit me. Unfortunately, this snack wasn’t for me. I’m sure that some people would really like this but it’s not my cup of tea. I’m impressed with myself that I tried it though.

Sesame Cuttlefish

Sesame Baked Cuttlefish Snack Puffs (Product of Thailand)

Another seafood snack, yikes. I really wish that I liked seafood, I feel like my life would be a lot easier and I could try a ton of different cool dishes. These are less scary to me than the fish snacks because they are corn puffs which is more familiar for me. The ingredients for this one are : corn, rice, sugar, cuttlefish, vegetable oil, salt and flavouring (onion powder, chilli paste, chilli). At first I thought Sesame was just another flavouring of these puffs but I think it is actually the company name.

This was probably the thickest plastic packaging for a snack I have ever seen. I had to fight it just to get it open. This one did not have an appealing smell to me either but I told myself I would at least try it. These had quite a sweet taste to them which I wasn’t expecting. I wish they were just the puffs and seasoning, and not the cuttlefish. I think I will have to pass on these too. Once again though, I am glad this pouch is getting me to try some new things!

Ahh Cheese

Richeese Ahh Triple Cheese Snack (Product of Indonesia)

I received 2 of these cheese snacks in the pouch, both are triple cheese flavouring. I tend to be a little bit on the fence about cheese flavoured snacks. I don’t love cheese crackers but I do like snacks like Cheetos so I was hoping that these would be more towards the Cheetos end of the spectrum.

Once I had opened these, I was a little unsure. There was so much cheese. It is like Cheetos coated with some more cheese. This is also sweet which is so strange to me. I kind of like this one though. I am having a hard time with the sweetness of it considering it is a cheese snack but I will probably eat both of these so that’s good!

Edo Gummies

EDO Pack Assorted Fruit Gummy Candies (Product of China)

This was one snack that I had seen in unboxings that I was excited about. I love fruity snacks and I definitely love gummies. There were 2 packs of these in the pouch as well. When I pulled these out, I wasn’t sure if they were more like candies or fruit snacks but either one was fine with me.

After trying them, I would definitely say that they are more on the fruit snack side of things but they are really good! There are four flavours: grape, strawberry, peach, and mango. I really love all of those fruits in real fruit form so I am definitely okay with them in gummy form. I ate the entire first pouch right away and will definitely enjoy the second soon.

Yaokin Grape

Yaokin Sour Paper Grape (Product of Japan)

This is the thing that I was most excited for in the pouch. I am such a candy lover! Grape isn’t necessarily my favourite flavour but I do like it! This felt really thin and pliable through the packaging. I had expected this to be grape candy purple but when I opened it, it was more of a peach colour and had a coating of sugar on it which I assume is the sour flavouring.

This has the same kind of texture as the rainbow sour belts that you can buy. I wouldn’t say that this is sour, but rather that it is slightly tart. I know that probably doesn’t make sense. The grape flavouring isn’t the super artificial flavour that I am used to with candies here in Canada or the US but it’s obviously good because I already ate the whole thing. They also have soda and cola flavours which I would really enjoy trying!

Overall, I am glad that I ordered the pouch. Even though there were a couple of snacks that I wasn’t the biggest fan of, it allowed me to try some new and different foods and I found a couple of things that I really liked. I wish that you could pick a ‘no seafood’ option but that is okay, not a big deal.

I’m sure I sound like a Negative Nancy but I’m not trying to be. I’m not saying that any of these snacks are bad, they just are not to my personal taste. Some people would really love these I know! I would probably be more suited to a box that was candy/sweet treats related. However, I think I would order the pouch again if the snacks change and it is not just a set pouch that goes out to everyone that orders it. I have seen different products come in the pouch so I know that is not the case, I’m just not sure how often they do change the snacks.

MaskGenie and ABCDEat

I want to tell you about a couple of “subscription” services that I am really excited for. I put subscription in quotations because it is more like Memebox where you purchase the boxes you want rather than receiving a single box every month. Both of these services are run by a fellow blogger and Youtuber named Eugenie who goes by Genie for short. The boxes/pouches ship out of Hong Kong and all products included are tested by Genie herself to ensure quality. She really seems to care a lot about what she includes in her boxes which I love because you know you will be getting products that are worth your money.

MaskGenie

MaskGenie is a service that I am so excited about! As of right now, this is a service that you need to “purchase” each month, so it is not a recurring subscription at the moment. Every month, you will receive different types of face masks that Genie has tested out and thinks are of good enough quality for you to try! There are two options for purchase: 5 masks for $12, or 10 masks for $22. Both of these prices include the shipping from Hong Kong so that is pretty good.

I am absolutely obsessed with masks, they are my favourite skincare product so I jumped on the chance to try this mask pouch. You can place an order for the January pouch until January 11 and it will ship on January 19. The first/second month are a little bit off in timing so the ordering for the February pouch begins January 12 and it will ship February 2. After that, each month will ship on the first Monday of that particular month.

If you are interested in learning more about this service, you can find the MaskGenie Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MaskGenie or you can watch Genie’s video that will tell you about Mask Genie here: MaskGenie Video.

If you would like to try out this service, just email maskgenie@gmail.com with your paypal email address and they will send you an invoice! I will be sure to blog my unboxing once I receive this pouch so keep an eye out for that!

ABCDEat

Genie’s other service, which was actually the first “subscription” service she created is called ABCDEat (Asian Box Can Do Eat). This is also a mystery box kind of service but rather than providing sheet masks, they provide an assortment of Asian snacks that match the theme of the box that you have purchased. Once again, this is not a recurring monthly subscription, instead you purchase only the boxes that you are interested in. At any given point, it seems like there are a variety of boxes to choose from.

There are three different types of boxes that you can purchase: monthly boxes, special boxes and the pouch. First of all, we have the monthly box which is $21.99 USD including shipping and will ship out on the third Monday of each month. At the moment, the monthly box available for purchase is the February box. These boxes seem to be a mix of sweet and savoury snacks and include quite a few products.

The special boxes are boxes that have a specific theme and they also sell for $21.99 USD including shipping. The special boxes available for purchase at the moment are:Taste of Thai (ships January 26), Taste of Korea(ships January 27), Taste of Taiwan (ships January 28), Noodle Box (ships January 12), and the Chinese New Year Box (ships January 21). I decided to try the Taste of Taiwan box because it was the description that appealed the most to me, and hopefully it won’t be all seafood products (eek!).

Finally are the pouches. These are called the Happy Friday Pouch (at least at the moment) and they are only $8.99 USD including shipping. The pouches include about 4 products for you to try at an low price which is exciting! I decided to try this one too because it was inexpensive and I figured why not. This service has its own website so rather than emailing your paypal address, you can purchase through the website.

If you would like to learn more about ABCDEat, you can view their facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/ABCDEat, you can find their website here http://www.abcdeatbox.com/, or you can watch Genie’s video about the service here: ABCDEat Video.

Genie seems like a wonderful person and I am so happy to be able to try out her services and support her business. I hope that I enjoy these as much as I think I will! If you would like to view Genie’s blog, you can find it at http://geniesfavproducts.blogspot.ca/.

Thanks so much for reading! I will report back once I have received my box/pouches!
